  • Overview
  • Hospitals like Kingston General, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children and the Centre for Addition and Mental Health are exploring new patient engagement initiatives and creating patient/family advisory councils.
  • Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) recently released its first patient engagement report, outlining why patient engagement is important for Ontario and their efforts to drive improvement through Person-Centred Care in cancer and chronic kidney disease health systems and beyond.
  • The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) has supported 17 organizations across Canada and 22 individual health care teams to engage patients and families in designing care that feels personalized to an individual’s needs. We’re even seeing the results of CFHI’s efforts right here in Ontario. A clinical initiative at the Huron Perth Health Alliance resulted in faster blood analysis for chemotherapy (from 2-3 hours down to 15-20 minutes), meaning that cancer patients can now get treatment sooner.
  • The Change Foundation created Panorama, a panel of 32 Ontario residents who met to exchange views and advice to help providers improve patient experiences. The panel was part of a new trend of health care partnerships between patients and organizations. The Change Foundation also recently launched “20 faces of change” to recognize patients who have been leaders.
  • Patient Canada works to bring the voices of patients and caregivers to health care across Canada with patient and family partnerships. Its president, Sholom Glouberman, is a health care systems policy analyst and teacher – and a patient himself. A major surgical procedure nearly ten years ago has helped inform his approach to managing patient experiences.
