A Project That Reduced Unnecessary Tests and Treatments
Studies show that up to 30% of health care services may be unnecessary.
The Choosing Wisely: An Idea Worth Spreading project reduced unnecessary tests and treatments by helping clinicians and patients engage in conversations about those services.
Hospitals and primary care teams participated in the project and improved quality care for patients by implementing Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations.
North York General Hospital led this project that was funded by ARTIC, a program of the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario and Health Quality Ontario that accelerates the spread of proven care.

Choosing Wisely Ontario is part of the broader Choosing Wisely Canada campaign.
Led by Health Quality Ontario and Choosing Wisely Canada, it encourages widespread adoption of Choosing Wisely recommendations across Ontario’s hospitals, primary care clinics and long-term care homes, and provides tools and supports in several high priority areas.
