Diagnostic Imaging: A peer learning community in Ontario
Ontario’s radiologists and members of their teams have formed the Diagnostic Imaging Peer Learning Community.
Its purpose: To support an ongoing culture of quality improvement in imaging services, where improved patient care is the result.
Specifically, it helps members:
-
Implement a Diagnostic Imaging Peer Learning Program using our peer learning toolkit as a guide
-
Learn from other radiologists and teams across the province
-
Participate in educational webinars, discussion groups, and peer mentoring

A Diagnostic Imaging Peer Learning Program fosters continuous quality improvement in imaging services through anonymous peer review. And the peer learning community, along with our toolkit, helps radiology teams implement a peer learning program in their organization.
By implementing this program, hospitals, physicians and their patients can expect:
-
Enhanced consistency and accuracy of radiology services to improve the quality of care for patients
-
Supported and ongoing skills development through peer-to-peer learning in a non-punitive environment
-
Better informed decision-making about patient treatment, physician training, and continuing medical education
-
Supported and ongoing learning to help foster a culture of quality improvement, transparency, and accountability in the diagnostic imaging community
The program model is based on recommendations laid out in Health Quality Ontario’s expert panel report on diagnostic imaging quality and aligns with guidelines from the Canadian Association of Radiologists.
The Diagnostic Imaging Peer Learning Toolkit is a comprehensive set of resources to support organizations as they implement their own Diagnostic Imaging Peer Learning Program.
This toolkit can be used by both radiologists and administrative leadership to establish a culture of quality improvement in their organization.
The toolkit was developed as a collaboration between the Joint Department of Medical Imaging and Health Quality Ontario, and approved by an advisory panel of radiologists from a variety of Ontario practice settings.
